I received the following email from the Communications Director of the Arizona Supreme Court, Cari Gerchick. In the interest of fairness, I thought I'd print her rebuttal to the news that the Arizona Supreme Court is banning certain language in order to protect the sensitivities of illegal aliens. Read original post here. Read my response to her below her email.
Dear Sir or
Madam,
Your website currently has
on it a story stating that words were banned from Arizona courtrooms.
Please know that despite
internet and media information to the contrary, the Chief Justice has not banned
the use of any words in the court system. Arizona's Code of Judicial Conduct
requires that judges be "patient, dignified and courteous" to all who appear in
the courts. In accord with that direction, our judges make every attempt to be
respectful and courteous in court proceedings.
Communications
Director
Arizona Supreme Court
Ms. Gerchick,
Your email seems to indicate that while no words are "banned," certain words may no longer be used because of the potential that they may be found to be offensive to people who have allegedly committed crimes. This, to me, is political correctness way out of control. Soon we will be calling rapes "inadvertent sexual opportunities," to soften their meaning.
Until such time as I receive clarification from the court that no language will be banned OR discouraged on the grounds that it may be insensitive, I will stick with my story.
Respectfully,
Lighthouse Keeper
