Some "Catholics" are making a mockery out of those who practice the Catholic faith. A few of the better known alleged Catholics are John Kerry, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and Ted Kennedy - members of Congress all, and all staunch supporters of a woman's legal right to kill her children.
Other so called Catholics who are duplicitous about their faith are Duquesne University law professor Nicholas Cafardi, who has recently endorsed Senator Obama on the basis of three things. One, he believes the abortion battle is lost. Two, he thinks Bush's handling of Hurricane Katrina was "intrinsically evil" and equal to abortion. And three, Obama supports welfare for women, which he says may eliminate the need for abortions.
Professor Cafardi has clearly gone mad, as has Pepperdine University law professor Douglas Kmiec, who states "Senator Obama comes reasonably close" to embodying "an alternative way to be pro-life." Huh?
Senator Obama has some of the most radical and anti-life positions of any candidate in decades.
The point here is that some "Catholics" are anything but. These so-called cafeteria Catholics, who pick and choose what about the faith they like, are damaging our faith.
Perhaps worse than them, though, are the Catholic clergy who do nothing in response. The Senators and Congresswoman Pelosi should clearly be stripped of the privilege to receive the Eucharist until they start to follow, and as politicians, support laws in harmony with the most basic tenets of our faith - the right to life. That they speak around the country in support of abortion while participating in the Eucharist and claiming to be "good Catholics" is nothing short of outrageous.
Church leaders need to step up and lead. Forgive those of us who fall from grace and repent, but excommunicate those who day after day, in vote after vote, participate in destroying for the most helpless God's most precious gift...life. In doing so, Church members who deserve to call themselves Catholics will be proud. We may be fewer in number, but we will be stronger, more energized, and truer to the teachings of Christ.
